Case Study: World's first hydrogen-powered film shoot

Customer: Toyota (GB) plc and Toyota Motor Corporation

Toyota and DMS Media had the vision to carry out a fully hydrogen-powered film shoot to celebrate the rise of Toyota from a family weaving firm to a global manufacturing giant, and at the same time to showcase what is possible with hydrogen. The film shoot would take place in the centre of a city, with everything on-site being powered by green hydrogen, and it had to work flawlessly within less than a month.

Hydrologiq successfully deployed two 100kVA fuel-cell generators, fuelled by a single hydrogen tube-trailer to make this spectacular project possible.

The Challenge

The concept of the film shoot was to use Oldham landmark Booth House as the backdrop for a lighting projection spectacle showcasing practical usages of hydrogen power and depicting the rise of Toyota from a family weaving firm to a global manufacturing giant.

This type of shoot typically would have requested two 100kVA generators, running full time, burning thousands of litres of diesel, and producing several tonnes of CO2e (plus a huge amount of NOx and particulate emissions) over a 4-day period.

Powering the high-power projectors, the lighting and camera equipments, as well as all the on-site vehicles, required two hydrogen fuel-cell generators and the use of a tube-trailer for hydrogen transport and on-site storage.

But how do end users like Toyota access this solution?

Can this complex deployment be set up within a tight event timeframe?

How can safety be guaranteed, especially in the centre of a city?

What next?

Explore Potential

Hydrogen has the potential to decarbonise large numbers of filming projects by replacing diesel.

Paving the way for large-scale replacement of a fossil fuel.

Scale Green Hydrogen

Groups like Toyota have the scale of demand to secure lower cost supplies of green hydrogen generated by emerging UK hydrogen producers.

Working Together

Leaders in the film and TV industry could work with hydrogen industry stakeholders like Hydrologiq to build a practical roadmap to replacing diesel with alternative power sources like solar, wind, batteries and hydrogen.

More Trials

Longer trials where hydrogen is directly replacing diesel can showcase the positive carbon impact of using hydrogen.

"We talked about discussion is discussion, but execution is execution. And in delivering this - in doing something that is a first, and effectively making the impossible possible, we've created a film that showcases the transformation journey we've been on before and we're on again, but we've done it in a way that showcases the flexibility and impact of hydrogen in our society as we go forward."
