Deliver the world's first hydrogen-powered filmshoot for Toyota (GB) plc and Toyota Motor Corporation in under a month? Challenge accepted.

Just over a year ago Jon Hunt from Toyota (GB) plc asked us to power a ground-breaking but also very challenging project. One which many at the time thought was going to be "impossible"...

At Hydrologiq - that's the kind of challenge we thrive on. We are doers, not talkers. We make things possible.

In this case Toyota and the fantastic DMS Media wanted a fully hydrogen-powered film shoot, in the centre of a city, powering a large number of projectors, cameras, and vehicles, all to be on site and working flawlessly within less than a month.

Replacing dirty diesel generators

This type of shoot typically would have requested two 100kVA gensets, running full time and producing 7 tonnes of CO2e (plus a huge amount of NOx and particulate emissions) over a 4-day period. Not the sort of pollution we want or should accept with clean-running alternatives available.

Talking of alternatives, Hydrologiq delivered a turnkey, modern, silent, no pollution solution running on green hydrogen. Delivery was a complete success with absolutely no issues. The production crew had all the clean power they would need, they got the shots, and we showed that hydrogen is absolutely the drop-in replacement for diesel generators.

Hydrogen powering film at scale

To quote Harry Ricardo, video technician on the shoot: "I couldn't see any reason why large productions couldn't be powered by hydrogen. Everything has been seamless from the off, nothing's happened differently to what we always do, which is only a good thing."

Hydrologiq are scaling the use of hydrogen for off-grid power. Powering this film showed it is entirely possible, a sentiment that Stuart Sanders, Toyota's UK Marketing Director, shares for the future of Toyota and hydrogen in general: "We talked about discussion is discussion, but execution is execution. And in delivering this - in doing something that is a first, and effectively making the impossible possible, we've created a film that showcases the transformation journey we've been on before and we're on again, but we've done it in a way that showcases the flexibility and impact of hydrogen in our society as we go forward."
